Narrative of Video:
The video begins with lead singer Eddie Vedder at the microphone yelling "This is not a TV studio, Josh, turn these lights out". The video is filmed during a live performance. The camera spotlights the fans in the audience who are cheering Vedder on. He continues to yell, "This is a ..... rock concert". The audience explodes and the music starts. Vedder is rocking out on stage. The camera is a wide shot of the stage but the lighting is dark. The only one who can really be seen is Vedder. The camera changes angles to a side shot and the drummer and guitarist can be seen. It changes again to a frontal shot that is more close in on Vedder. The camera shifts again to the audience and then back to the band in a wider angle shot. It moves in close on the drummer and the lighting highlights the drummer. The camera continues to shift positions and the lighting also changes so that emphasis is on one band member or another. The focus is on Vedder and then to the audience again, where people can be seen dancing. A person is held up and passed from one person to another. The camera moves back to Vedder and the lighting is also focused on him. A quick change of camera angles shows the other band members, then the audience and back to Vedder. He has a very intense expression on his face. People are jumping up on the stage. The camera focuses in on Vedder again for a moment and then on the lead guitarist and then to the drummer and back to Vedder in time with the music. the light changes to blue and the camera moves to the guitar player as he does his solo. A shot of the audience watching is also in blue light. As the music continues to play, the stage goes dark and a spotlight is turned on that follows Vedder who is climbing up to what appears to be the balcony. He pulls himself along the ceiling and then hangs there by one arm. The next shot shows Vedder standing on a ledge. The blue light is centered on him. He is looking down at the crowd below. He launches himself into the crowd and the crowd catches him and passes him along. The song starts again in the background with Vedder singing which indicates that the diving portion of the video is footage from a different concert that is spliced into this video. The camera moves in on Vedder on stage singing again. There are shots of the crowd. A young man is dancing wildly. The camera continues to move to different shots of the band. There is another shot of the audience. The camera moves back to the stage. The music is coming to an end and Vedder lays down on the stage. The video ends.
How the Music and Video Relate:
The video is a live performance of the song. The images of the high energy performance of the band and the enthusiasm of the crowd work well with the tempo of this song.
Review:
The video shows Pearl Jam live performances to be fast paced and filled with excitement.
