Narrative of Video:
The video begins with a woman sitting at a kitchen table. She is wearing an apron and crackng eggs into a large bowl. She keeps checking her watch. The music begins with an image of Cynidi Lauper moving very quickly across the screen. The scene changes to a young man riding his bicycle down a street. The scene changes back to the woman, presumbably Lauper's mother in the video, and then to Lauper who is dancing along the same street the boy was riding his bike. The scene changes back to the mother at the table and Lauper dances into the kitchen. She sings the words of the song to her mother. The scene changes to her dancing down the hallway of the house. The scene changes again and focuses in on a telephone. Lauper is in her pajamas and her father, played by wrestler Lou Albano. The two act out the words of the song, "my father yells what you gonna do with your life". She talls him "Girls just want to have fun". The next scene shows Lauper picking up the phone, first she picks it up upside down and then she turns it around so it's the right way. The camera moves from one girl to another, each talking on the phone. A small circular mirror in the corner contains Lauper's image as she continues to sing the song. The girls are all together during the chorus of the song, then the image of the whole group turns into a bubble that floats in the air. The group bubble separates into individual bubbles and then reunites again into one big bubble. The scene changes and Lauper is sitting on the couch watching television. The television pictures changes to a horror film with a zombie creature carrying a woman over his shoulder. The scene changes to a close up of Lauper. She puts on a pair of sunglasses and the camera alternates between the other girls putting on sunglasses to them all together in a group. The scene changes again and Lauper is on the street. There are people around her and she is dancing along the street. The girls join behind her in a single file line, and they are dancing too. They dance up a flight up stairs and people are trying to get past them going down the stairs. The group of people with Lauper gets bigger. They are all dancing and having fun. The group moves into the kitchen where the woman sits, and then dances through the house. The camera alternates between pictures of them dancing in one room and in another. The scene moves into a bedroom and the whole group is in it dancing. Her "parents" walk down the hallway and peek through the keyhole on the bedroom door. They see the whole group dancing in the room.. The door opens and some of the group fall out of the door onto Lauper's "parents". The camera moves back to the inside of the bedroom where the group is continuing to dance and have a good time. They start throwing confettie into the crowd and the video comes to an end.
How the Music and Video Relate:
The video and the music relate very well together. The video provides the images for the words in the song. The song is light and upbeat and fun, and so is the video.
Review:
I think the video works exceptionally well with this song. The video is fun and so is the song. The video does a very good job of acting out the words to the song.
