Narrative of Video:
As the video begins, Pat Benatar is walking along the street at night. There are sounds of sirens and street noise in the background. The music begins to play and the scene changes. A bus is moving along the freeway. The scene changes back to her walking the street and then back to the bus. The scene moves inside the bus and Benatar is sitting in the very back of the bus. The video alternates between the street at night and her sitting in the bus. The next scene shows a door opening and Benatar is running from her parents. Her father throws her out of the house and tells her not to come back. Her brother is standing in the window watching. The scene changes to the city street and she is walking in front of a building with a neon sign that reads "Girls Ballroom". The next scene shows her in a bus station near an escalator. The video flashes back to her father. Two girls are leaving the house. It moves back to he street. It's daytime and she is walking along the crowded street. The scene changes to her parents eating dinner. The next scene is Benatar walking into a building. The interior is dark. She walks up some stairs and opens a door. There is room filled with a variety of different women and men. One of the men asks her to dance. She dances with the man and her face is blank. The camera pans around the room as other women are being asked to dance. The next scene is Benatar sitting and writing a letter. The next scene is her brother reading the letter. The camera moves back to the place where the women are. A woman screams "leave me alone" to a man who has grabbed her by the wrist. He appears to be a pimp. Benatar walks toward him and the other women surround him. The women form a group and begin a choreographed dance. The man stands agains the bar. He appears to be frightened. The camera focuses on the women dancers. It alternates from the female dancers to the pimp. He begins to dance with Benatar. She throws a glass of liquid in his face and leaves. He starts to come at her, but she stands her ground. The other women gather behind her and they begin dancing again. They dance out of the building and into the street. The scene changes back to Benatar on the bus. The scene changes again and she is with the group of women. They are saying good-bye to her. She walks away then turns and waves. The scene changes to her on the bus again as the video comes to an end.
How the Music and Video Relate:
The video and the music relate very well together. The video provides the images for the words in the song.
Review:
The video does a good job of adding images to the words of the song. It shows a few different ways that “love is a battlefield”.
